BWC video shows 2023 shooting that killed Minn. deputy, wounded two other officers

Three officers were struck during the incident and treated at a hospital; Pope County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Josh Owen died from his injuries

STARBUCK, Minn. — The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has released body-worn camera footage showing an incident that claimed the life of Pope County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Josh Owen in 2023.

Police officers brought the injured to the front of the church, where paramedics triaged them and, at times, loaded two or three patients at once into ambulances

Video released on Aug. 1 shows an officer with the Starbuck Police Department and two Pope County deputies responding to a reported domestic dispute on April 15, 2023. The officers spoke with the suspect, eventually informing him that he was under arrest.

The suspect then stood up from the table where he was sitting and began firing shots at the officers. All three officers were struck. Two officers returned fire, striking the suspect.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. The officers were treated at a hospital, where Owen later died.

Owen, who was killed on his 44th birthday, was an Iraq war veteran and a 14-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, according to a previous Associated Press report.
