The leading cause of preventable death in trauma is massive hemorrhage. When a major artery is severed, death can occur in as little as 3–5 minutes. Even less severe venous bleeding, left uncontrolled, can kill a victim in fewer than 10.
There are ways to control severe hemorrhage, but they must happen quickly. That means they must be done by the first responders on scene – or, even better, by a bystander. That was the genesis of the STOP THE BLEED® campaign, which was created to provide non-medically trained responders with the knowledge and tools to control severe bleeding before the arrival of emergency responders.
This infographic, sponsored by Rescue Essentials, overviews the dangers of uncontrolled bleeding, the contents of standard bleeding-control kits, and how they can be deployed to save lives. Law enforcement can help by promoting bleeding-control measures within their communities and carrying kits themselves.
