DETROIT — A 68-second video released by Detroit police Friday shows a gunman striding into one of the city’s precinct stations and firing a shotgun at surprised officers.
The shooting took place last Sunday, during a bloody 24-hours in which ten officers were shot nationwide. Four Detroit police officers were wounded in the shooting and the gunman was fatally shot.
Chief Ralph Godbee explained the department’s decision to release the video:
“We believe there is great value to the public viewing what our officers have now had an opportunity to see. We want this video to be a tool for the law enforcement community in general to understand what happened and make some recommendations for us so that, as an industry, law enforcement learns a lesson from this. We are very thankful that at the end of this, all four members who were injured are going to be OK.”
