Driver intentionally slams SUV into Philadelphia police cruiser; injured officer still makes arrest

“The officer blasted her horn…" Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said. “It appears that he intentionally put his car in reverse and rammed [the officer’s vehicle]”

PHILADELPHIA —A Philadelphia police officer managed to arrest a driver who intentionally backed into her SUV despite suffering injuries in the crash, NBC 10 Philadelphia reported.

The March 6 incident occurred as officers had just finished serving a protection from abuse order to a man, according to the report. The man, who had been told to leave the complex, returned to the parking lot, police said.

The officer followed the man’s Lexus SUV to ensure he would leave, at which point he put the vehicle into reverse and accelerated toward her, according to Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

“The officer blasted her horn, but the driver kept coming at her SUV,” Small said. “It appears that he intentionally put his car in reverse and rammed [the officer’s vehicle].”

The collision caused heavy front-end damage to the police SUV, deployed multiple airbags and left the officer shaken, according to the report. Despite this, the 19-year veteran of the 7th District managed to exit her vehicle and take the suspect into custody.

“It was pretty amazing that this female officer — even though she was hit hard and the airbags hit her hard — still got out of her vehicle and placed this 40-year-old male into custody,” Small said.

The officer sustained minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation, according to the report. The suspect, who was unharmed in the crash, was taken to a police station and is expected to face assault on police and related charges.
