LOS ANGELES — Newly released body camera footage shows the events leading to a police shooting where a man shot at officers during a foot pursuit, KABC reported.
The July 5 incident began when officers on patrol stopped a man riding a bicycle on the sidewalk, according to the report.
The officers asked the man if he had a gun in his pocket. Video shows he argued with them, asking to be allowed to go to work and denying that he had a weapon.
The man climbed off the bicycle at the officers’ repeated instructions before immediately fleeing on foot. Video shows him reaching back to fire shots at officers during the pursuit.
One officer was struck in both legs and sustained a a graze wound to the face. He remains hospitalized in stable condition, according to the report.
Officers pursued the man as he discarded the firearm after it reportedly malfunctioned. Police said he ran farther into the park, where he was taken into custody following what they described as a “Non-Categorical Use of Force.”
Surveillance camera footage shows an officer tackling the man to the ground and subduing him with tactical strikes.
The suspect sustained a head laceration and was treated at a hospital before being cleared for booking.
He faces two felony counts of premeditated attempted murder of a police officer and one felony count of carrying an unregistered loaded firearm. He has pleaded not guilty and could face up to 75 years to life in prison if convicted.
Police recovered a 9mm Polymer 80 ghost gun, a loaded magazine and spent shell casings at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
