MAUI, Hawaii — Suspect Clembert Kaneholani, 38, is being held without bail after allegedly shooting and killing Maui police officer Suzanne O Friday night in Paia, Hawaii News Now reported today.
Maui Police Department did not respond to the Star-Advertiser’s inquiries today regarding the suspect.
The fatal shooting occurred around 8 :26 p.m. when officers responded to a report of an unknown person trespassing at the Paia Sugar Mill on Baldwin Avenue and discharging a firearm.
The Maui Police Department reported that when officers arrived, they encountered an armed suspect who fired at them, striking one of the responding officers. Police said officers returned fire and hit the suspect in the lower body.
Officer O, a five-year veteran of the department, was shot in the chest and, despite lifesaving efforts, died from her injuries. MPD praised her professionalism, courtesy, and tact.
According to police documents, as reported by KITV 4, Kaneholani was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, two counts of being a felon in possession of ammunition, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, place to keep firearm, and ownership or possession of a prohibited firearm.
