The daily realities of policing have shifted dangerously. Officers are encountering increased hostility, understaffed shifts and a lack of timely support, with many are navigating these threats alone. Are officers being set up to survive today’s policing realities?
That’s the central question Police1 set out to answer in our fifth annual “What Cops Want” State of the Industry survey, sponsored by Utility. This year’s focus: the rise in assaults on officers and the operational gaps leaving them exposed.
The findings of this year’s “What Cops Want” survey are urgent and eye-opening:
🚔 40% of officers reported being assaulted on duty in the past year
🧍♂️ 82% patrol alone — yet 92% say a partner makes them feel safer
⏱️ 75% experienced dangerously delayed backup during emergencies
📉 83% said understaffing directly compromises their safety
🎯 Officers cited poor training, inexperienced officers and absent leadership as top risks
These insights reveal an officer safety crisis that demands immediate attention. But they also point toward solutions.
