Video shows moment ex-school cop allegedly shot Fla. police officer ex-boyfriend

Surveillance footage shows Miami-Dade Officer Damian Colon collapsing after being shot in the head; his ex-girlfriend, a former SRO, has been charged in the case

MIAMI —Newly released video provides a closer look at the domestic violence-related shooting of a Miami-Dade Police officer by his ex-girlfriend, a former Miami-Dade Schools police officer, NBC 6 reported.

The video shows the shooting of Officer Damian Colon, allegedly carried out by his ex-girlfriend Yessenia Sanchez, who is now charged with first-degree attempted murder, according to the report. Authorities say Sanchez tracked Colon using an app and confronted him at his Hialeah home in November 2022.

Surveillance video from Colon’s residence appears to show the two talking before Sanchez raises a gun, fires at Colon’s head and walks away as he collapses.

Following the shooting, Sanchez fled the scene and crashed into multiple vehicles before attempting to flee on foot, according to the report. Officers later arrested her at her home.

Body camera footage shows Sanchez being taken into custody. She remains jailed without bond on charges including attempted first-degree murder, stalking and leaving the scene of a crash, according to the report.

Colon, a 17-year Miami-Dade police veteran, survived the shooting but has undergone multiple surgeries and extensive rehabilitation. Sanchez had previously resigned from her position as a Miami-Dade Schools Police officer in 2021 to avoid termination following a domestic violence arrest, according to the report.
