Bystander video shows Waymo obliviously driving through LAPD standoff

The taxi can be seen in video turning left as it approached an intersection blocked by multiple police cruisers, passing by a suspect being held at gunpoint after a pursuit

LOS ANGELES — A video captured by bystanders and shared on social media shows a self-driving Waymo robotaxi brushing right past a suspect being stopped and held at gunpoint by officers, NBC News reported.

The taxi can be seen in a video turning left as it approached an intersection blocked by multiple police cruisers running lights and sirens. In making the turn, the vehicle went past a white truck that was involved in a felony stop after a pursuit.

Video shows the driver lying face down on the street as multiple officers trained their guns on him and issued instructions.

Officers issued instructions directing the car out of the scene. The vehicle appeared to slow down and signal a right turn as it continued to move through the intersection.

No one was injured in the incident, and the driver was taken into custody, according to the report.

The LAPD told NBC News that the taxi’s presence did not influence the officers’ tactics.

“Safety is our highest priority at Waymo, both for people who choose to ride with us and with whom we share the streets,” a Waymo spokesperson said. “When we encounter unusual events like this one, we learn from them as we continue improving road safety and operating in dynamic cities.”
