ANGLETON, Texas — The Angleton Police Department is mourning the loss of Sgt. J.D. White, a veteran officer and community leader who died after being struck by a vehicle while escorting a funeral procession, Click2Houston reported.

White was critically injured in the incident and was airlifted by LifeFlight to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The Texas Department of Public Safety is assisting in the ongoing crash investigation.

“This is a tremendous loss for our department and the Angleton community,” said Police Chief Lupe Valdez. “Sgt. White was a trusted officer and a compassionate leader who brought heart to every aspect of his work. His dedication to the Shop with a Cop program, and his ability to connect with and uplift children in our community speaks volumes about the kind of person he was. His absence will be deeply felt by us all.”

White served with the Angleton Police Department for 19 years.

Angleton Mayor John Wright has ordered flags at all city facilities to be flown at half-staff for 14 days in Sgt. White’s honor.
