LVMPD unveils ‘The Rook,’ an armored vehicle built to breach barriers, boost officer safety

LVMPD said the SWAT vehicle offers “greater protection” by using its shields and attachments to support law enforcement missions

LAS VEGAS — The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has introduced a new armored vehicle, known as “The Rook,” designed to assist officers in high-risk incidents such as barricades and hostage rescues, Hoodline reported.

The department highlighted the vehicle’s capabilities in a social media announcement, emphasizing its potential to improve safety for both officers and suspects.

The Rook is equipped with a hydraulic arm that can break through obstacles with precision and features real-time surveillance cameras to provide situational awareness. The vehicle can be operated by a single officer, potentially reducing the number of personnel exposed to danger during critical incidents.

LVMPD officials said the vehicle offers “greater protection” by using its shields and attachments to support law enforcement missions. It is intended to help resolve standoffs and similar emergencies with a focus on non-violent outcomes.

“The result? Greater safety for our officers, community members and even suspects,” the department stated.

LVMPD said it plans to use The Rook across a variety of tactical scenarios and sees it as a life-saving tool that underscores the department’s commitment to protecting the community.
