WARREN, Mich. — With Halloween fast approaching and trick-or-treaters set to roam neighborhoods this Friday evening, the Warren Police Department is warning parents that snacks that appear to be standard chips and candy could contain THC and psilocybin mushroom products.

On Oct. 23, Warren police detectives executed a search warrant at a Warren residence as part of an ongoing investigation. During the search, officers discovered several bags of chips, snacks, and candy that appeared to be regular snacks. A closer examination determined that many of the items contained THC and psilocybin mushroom products.

STAYING ALERT: What officers need to improve situational awareness

The packaging, Warren police said, made the products look like regular, well-known candies and snacks.

The Warren Police Department is reminding parents, guardians, and the entire community to stay vigilant during the Halloween season.

“Our investigation revealed that certain candies and snacks were deliberately made to look like everyday treats, but actually contained dangerous substances such as THC and psilocybin mushrooms,” said Warren Police Commissioner Eric Hawkins. “We’re grateful to have removed these items before they could fall into the hands of children.

“This serves as an important reminder for families to carefully inspect all Halloween treats and to prioritize safety this season.”

The Warren Police Department reminds all trick-or-treaters and their families to:

• Carefully inspect all candy and treats before allowing children to consume them

• Discard any unwrapped, loose, or homemade items unless you know and trust the source

• Look for unusual packaging, odors, or discoloration that may indicate tampering

• And remind children not to eat any treats until they return home and an adult has had a chance to check them.

If you discover any suspicious items, do not handle them. Instead, contact the Warren Police Department at 586-574-4700 or for residents of other communities reach out to your police department.
