BWC: Man drives at child that fell out of his car, Nev. officers before OIS

Officers pulled the child to safety before one officer fired at the driver who steered toward them

LAS VEGAS — The North Las Vegas Police Department released body-camera footage showing the moments leading up to an officer shooting a man who attempted to hit him with a vehicle during an incident at a gas station that involved three children and two adults, KLAS reported.

The incident occurred on July 20 when officers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle occupied by two adults, three children and a dog. A caller reported that one or more of the adults may have been passed out or under the influence, according to North Las Vegas police.

Body-camera video shows officers making contact with a suspect who was standing outside the driver’s side of a black Honda Accord. After speaking with officers, the suspect re-entered the vehicle and attempted to flee. During the attempt, one of the children fell from the vehicle and sustained a minor injury. Officers picked up the child and moved them to the side of the lane between gas pumps.

The suspect vehicle stopped after the child fell, allowing a female suspect to get out and run back toward the child. As officers tried to detain her, she turned around and ran back toward the vehicle. Officers prevented her from getting back in and moved to detain the driver.

“Get out of the car!” the officer can be heard saying.

The driver then pulled away and circled the parking lot before driving toward the group, which included an officer, the detained suspect and the child, at high speeds. After that officer quickly acted to push the child and suspect to safety, the car continued toward another officer.

That officer then fired five rounds as the car approached, striking the suspect in the torso. The suspect’s vehicle struck the officer in the leg before continuing across a sidewalk and coming to a stop on the median.

The driver was hospitalized and later booked on multiple charges, including two counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon and three counts of child abuse or neglect. Additional charges are pending.

Officers found heroin, methamphetamine and a firearm inside the vehicle, according to the report. Police confirmed that neither of the adults had legal custody of the three children, who were placed in the care of Child Protective Services. The children’s legal guardian was identified as a maternal relative.

The other suspect was arrested on five counts of child abuse or neglect. Both suspects have prior criminal histories involving drug, assault, and weapons offenses, police said.

North Las Vegas Animal Protective Services took custody of the dog found in the vehicle. The officer struck by the vehicle is expected to recover.
